Foot-and-Mouth Disease

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread rapidly and affects both domesticated and wild ruminants, as well as pigs. FMD has an economically devastating impact on affected countries because trade barriers are imposed in countries where the disease occurs.

The FMDV genome encodes a single polyprotein that is cleaved during the translation. Mature structural and nonstructural viral protein derive after a cascade of further cleavages by viral proteases.

Vaccine produced according to the guidelines of the OIE are depleted of nonstructural proteins like 3ABC during purification steps. Antibody to 3ABC is generally accepted as the most reliable single indicator for viral replication.

Detection of anti-3ABC antibodies has been described upon challenge in animals with and without previous vaccination, confirming the potential of 3ABC as a marker for the surveillance of vaccinated populations.

Testing Solutions

CHEKIT* Foot-and-Mouth Disease 3ABC Antibody ELISA Test Kit
Availability/Distribution: Outside the U.S.

The CHEKIT FMD-3ABC Bo-Ov ELISA Test Kit is an enzyme immunoassay for the detection of antibodies against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMDV) in serum or plasma samples of bovine and ovine origin. This test allows differentiates between samples from infected (3ABC positive) and vaccinated (3ABC negative) animals.

  • Detects anti-3ABC antibodies
  • High specificity with samples from multi-vaccinated animals
  • Ready-for-use reagents
  • Easy automation
  • Easy data management when used with xChek* software
CHEKIT* FMD Antibody ELISA:
5 plates (strips), specific to screening serum or plasma samples, differentiates infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) (bovine, ovine)
